Winsor & Newton Aerosol Varnishes

Winsor & Newton Aerosol varnishes are available in 5 different finishes.

A final clear, removable, non-yellowing varnish for the protection of oil, alkyd and acrylic paintings. Available in GlossMatt and Satin in 150ml and 400ml aerosol spray cans.  These can be used once the painting is at least 6 months old

The Retouching varnish  gives temporary protection to recently completed oil paintings. The retouching varnish allows the oil painting to dry and at the same time give the oil painting a temporary gloss finish.
After 6 to 9 months when the oil painting is completely dry, regular artist  varnish can be applied without the need to remove the retouching varnish. It can also be painted over. Available in 150ml or 400ml

Dammar Varnish (High Gloss) is a pale yellow varnish which dries to a high gloss for use on oil and alkyd paintings. It tends to darken with age and is removable with Distilled Turpentine. Can be used on oil paintings when they are a 6 months old.

Two sizes are available in each of the five different options;

150ml – £10.45

400ml – £17.80

Description

To make the most of your Winsor & Newton aerosol varnishes and prevent the nozzles getting clogged, follow these tips on how to use them:

  1. Try not to store aerosols below 15C (59F). If they have been stored around this temperature do not use them until they come up to room temperature again. This is because all aerosols contain a mix of product and propellant and at lower temperatures the products want to “drop out of solution”. If this happens they could either block the nozzle, or come out in blobs and fall on your work.
  2. Always shake the container vigorously before use to ensure the contents are homogenous.
  3. Always hold the container upside down and spray for a couple of seconds. This will send a spray of propellant only out of the nozzle and clear it.
  4. Always do this at the end of use as well, to clear the nozzle of material build up.
  5. Be careful if using the container extensively over a short period of time, as the contents’ temperature will drop with a potential for the product to drop out of solution. This applies to all aerosols but is only likely to be noticed during extensive use.
  6. Always spray with the can almost vertical and allow the contents to “cascade” on to the work.
  7. When spraying, the can should be held at least 25-30cm (10-12 inches) away from the work.
  8. Mount the work on a support that you don’t mind spoiling and spray side to side beyond the extremities of the work to ensure full coverage.
  9. For porous, unprimed surfaces such as card, canvas, hardboard or plaster, apply a thin layer of gloss varnish before using any matt or satin varnish
