Emma Sergeant was born in London and studied painting at Camberwell School of Art. Aged 21 she won the National Gallery Portrait Painting prize, setting in train a number of sell-out shows. In 1995 she travelled with the Prince of Wales around Egypt and Morocco and a year later around Ukraine and Central Asia.

‘It is an honour for Green and Stone to be collaborating with Emma on her show, ‘Touch the Spirit II’. My father, Roddy, has been framing Emma’s pictures since she was in her early twenties and thus I have been surrounded by them since I was a little girl. It seemed only fitting that the inauguration of Green and Stone’s Gallery would house Emma’s work. Her pictures have always captivated me to the extent that they are firm childhood memories. Where most children had mundane and obvious picture books to read, I was given Emma’s to pour through where charcoal horses carved like statues peered out at me from paper. I really hope those who come to see her work will recognise how truly special Emma is as an artist and enjoy this retrospective as my father and I have done over the years.’
